This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical physical horror, but inside Together lies a deep examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He dreads the notion of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters face the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the allegory never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
