The move by the Democratic National Committee to block the public viewing of its own autopsy report concerning the last presidential race appears shocking but not surprising. Resistant to hard truths, the DNC often functions more like a communications shop rather than an electoral entity focused on building a volunteer base capable of prevailing at the polls.

A Culture of Conformity

Unwilling to break with the party establishment's culture of conformity, the committee has remained within that legacy throughout 2025. Releasing the findings could have demonstrated whether party leaders are interested to foster open debate about the missteps that paved the way for the former president to win re-election. Yet, the leadership is moving forward as if there's nothing to understand from the tragic debacle of 2024.

• The Foreign Policy Impact: An unwillingness to shift a stance concerning a ongoing war allegedly caused losing many voters, notably with youth voters, Arab-Americans, and Muslim Americans.
• Losing Youth Backing: Polling data shows a significant decline in Democratic support from the youth electorate.

A Record Shunning Scrutiny

The decision to withhold fits a longstanding habit to avoid difficult realities. It echoes an episode in which virtually every Democratic officeholder in Congress supported an incumbent's insistence on seeking another term right up until a disastrous televised debate compelled a change.

At the same time, a significant majority of Democratic voters had been consistently telling surveyors of their opposition to that candidate to be the nominee.

Financial Concerns

An honest autopsy could examine matters about financial allocations, including what sums went to party strategists and ad buyers over the course of a campaign which expended an enormous sum during the general election.

The Broader Issue

At its core, the blockage regarding the analysis is symptomatic of a deference to the established hierarchy that oversaw a losing national race. The message to ordinary supporters – which includes millions of small donors – appears to be that they do not be trusted to see the lessons the leadership say they discovered from an analysis drawing from extensive interviews.

A party unable to publicly examine where it went wrong is unlikely to climb out of the rut which was so helpful to the rival party.
