Severe gales hitting speeds of up to 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in approximately 90,000 properties lacking electricity and forced authorities to call off in excess of 100 aircraft departures, according to domestic outlets.

These gusts are affecting the complete southern region and southern parts of the North Island, as stated by the national weather agency.

The nation's agencies have released rare severe gust advisories - the most severe warning - in central regions such as these major districts.

Residents have been urged to remain inside, stay off roads, and make arrangements for additional power and communication outages.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Measures

This outage is primarily influencing homes predominantly in the South Island, though officials say that the electricity supply was being gradually reinstated.

Local media have reported that in certain areas roofs have been ripped off houses, and power lines and trees have been brought down by the gales.

Across Wellington, a person was fatally injured after being hit by a falling limb at a popular trail walking spot on earlier this week.

Additionally in the city, a woman was blown onto moving cars on a road by a powerful blast, in a event that was recorded in a viral dashcam video.

Aircraft services to and from the urban area have been suspended as a result of the gusts, whereas some roads and libraries are also closed.

Meanwhile local leaders have declared a state of emergency, to assist emergency management operations.

Strike Action During Extreme Weather

The powerful gales on Thursday occur while many of school staff, physicians and civil servants are participating in what has been described as a "major walkout", demanding improved salaries and workplace environments.

However the extreme weather has compelled them to modify various scheduled activities, with various open-air gatherings shifted to interior venues or called off.

Like conditions are impacting the nearby nation, causing a heatwave to the nation's interior regions.

Officials have announced burning restrictions for concern about forest fires.
